Young Person Therapy
Support their emotions | Build confidence | Help them feel understood
When your child is struggling, it can affect everything. You might be trying to support them, but not knowing what the right thing to do is.
Struggling with school
They may be refusing to go, feeling overwhelmed, or experiencing Emotional School Based Avoidance.
Finding it hard to regulate emotions
Big reactions, shutdowns, anxiety or anger that feels difficult to manage.
Feeling misunderstood
Especially for neurodiverse young people, it can feel like no one really understands how they think or feel.
What Is Young Person Therapy and When Is It Needed?
Young person therapy provides a safe, supportive space where children and teenagers can begin to understand themselves and what they are experiencing. It is not about labelling or “fixing” them.
It is about helping them:
-
Understand how their mind works
-
Recognise their thoughts, feelings and behaviours
-
Develop tools to manage emotions
-
Build confidence and self-awareness
Support may be helpful when you notice:
-
Anxiety around school or avoidance of school
-
Emotional outbursts, shutdowns or withdrawal
-
Low confidence or self-esteem
-
Difficulty with friendships or social situations
-
Challenges linked to ADHD, Autism or other neurodiverse needs
-
Ongoing stress, overwhelm or behavioural concerns
At The Growth Place, we support young people in Rainham, Kent and online, helping them feel understood, supported and more in control of their emotions and behaviour.
What Challenges Do Young People Face Today?
Young people today are navigating a lot. For some, it’s anxiety, friendships or school pressure. For others, it goes deeper.
We regularly support young people experiencing:
-
Emotional School Based Avoidance (ESBA)
-
Repeated suspensions or time in isolation at school
-
Anxiety, overwhelm or low mood
-
Difficulty managing emotions
-
Neurodiverse challenges such as ADHD or Autism
-
Struggles with identity, confidence or feeling “different”
Often, these behaviours are not the problem. They are a sign that something underneath needs support. Understanding this changes everything.
Signs Your Child May Need Support
Every child is different, but there are some common signs that additional support may be helpful.
Young people don’t always have the words to explain how they are feeling, so it often shows up in their behaviour, emotions or physical responses. Many parents notice changes over time, such as increased anxiety, school avoidance, emotional outbursts or withdrawal. For neurodiverse young people, this can also include sensory overwhelm, difficulty processing emotions or challenges communicating their needs. When these patterns continue or begin to impact daily life, it can be a sign that your child would benefit from additional support and guidance.

How Therapy Can Help Young People
At The Growth Place, we take a supportive and tailored approach to working with young people. We meet them where they are. Sessions are designed to feel safe, engaging and appropriate to their age and needs.
Therapy can help young people to:
-
Understand how their brain works
-
Learn how thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected
-
Develop emotional regulation skills
-
Build confidence and self-esteem
-
Learn how to communicate and advocate for their needs
-
Feel calmer, more in control and more understood
For neurodiverse young people, this can be especially powerful. Instead of feeling like something is “wrong”, they begin to understand themselves in a way that builds confidence and self-acceptance.
