Take back control | Break the cycle | Feel like yourself again

When you're used to holding everything together, it can feel hard to admit something has got a hold on you.

Rely on something to cope

You might find yourself turning to alcohol, food, smoking, or other habits just to get through the day or switch off.

Feel stuck in a cycle

You tell yourself you’ll stop… but somehow you end up back in the same pattern again.

Lose control

It can feel like something else is in charge, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t quite break free.

What Is Addiction and
When Does It Become a Problem?

Addiction isn’t always what people think it is. It’s not just about extreme behaviours or hitting rock bottom. It can be much quieter than that. It might look like needing something to cope. To relax. To escape. To feel better… even just for a moment.

Addiction becomes a problem when the behaviour starts to feel out of your control or begins to impact your daily life, your relationships, your health, or how you feel about yourself.

You might notice that you keep going back to something even when you don’t want to. Or that you feel uncomfortable, restless or low without it.

At The Growth Place, we support people experiencing addiction in Rainham, Kent and online, helping you understand the patterns behind it and gently take back control.

What Causes addiction?

Addiction is rarely just about the habit itself. It’s usually a coping strategy your mind has learnt. For some people, it develops during stressful periods of life. For others, it can be linked to past experiences, emotional pain, or feeling overwhelmed.

Common underlying factors include:

  • Stress and burnout

  • Anxiety or low mood

  • Trauma or unresolved experiences

  • Emotional avoidance

  • Low self-worth or self-criticism

  • Habit patterns built over time

Your mind isn’t trying to work against you. It’s trying to help you cope in the only way it knows how. Understanding this is where change begins.

Signs and Symptoms of Addiction

Addiction can show up in different ways for different people. If you’re experiencing any of the below, you’re not alone and support is available. Many people experience addiction at some point in their lives, and support is available. It's important to remember that you haven't always had this addiction, there were points in your life, maybe when you were a child, when this wasn't something you needed. So if you are committed to making a change then this is something you can work on with our support.

How Addiction Therapy Helps

At The Growth Place, we don’t just focus on stopping the behaviour. We focus on understanding why it’s there in the first place. Many people come to us feeling frustrated with themselves. Like they “should be able to stop”. But addiction isn’t about willpower. It’s about patterns.

During therapy, we work with you to:

  • Understand what is driving the behaviour

  • Break the subconscious patterns behind it

  • Learn new ways to cope and regulate emotions

  • Rebuild control, confidence and self-trust

We offer a range of approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy, somatic therapy, and subconscious-based techniques such as The Control System. Each session is tailored to you, because no two people experience addiction in the same way.

What Happens in an Addiction Therapy Session?

When you attend your sessions it is important that you do not smoke, drink or do anything related to your specific addiction on the day of your appointment, this is a very important part of the process. If you are unable to do this, your appointment will be unable to take place.

Your first session is a space to talk. There is no judgement. No pressure. No expectation to have it all figured out. We start by understanding what’s been going on for you and what you want to change.

From there, we begin to explore the patterns behind the behaviour and introduce practical strategies to help you regain control.

Over time, many clients notice:

  • Reduced urges and cravings

  • More control over their choices

  • Improved emotional balance

  • Increased confidence and self-worth
