What Are Fears and Phobias and
When Do They  Become a Problem?

What Causes Fears and Phobias?

Fears and phobias are usually learned responses.

They can develop from:

  • A past experience

  • Something you witnessed

  • Something you were told or learned

  • A moment where your brain linked something to danger

Sometimes, the original cause isn’t obvious at all. What matters is that your brain has created a pattern where it reacts quickly to protect you. The problem is, that response is now happening even when you are safe. This is why phobias feel so automatic and hard to control. The good news is, because they are learned, they can also be unlearned.

Signs and Symptoms of Fears and Phobias

Phobias can affect your thoughts, body and behaviour, often very quickly and intensely. A phobia can trigger a strong and immediate response in both the mind and body, even when there is no real danger present. Many people describe knowing logically that they are safe, but still feeling a surge of panic, fear or discomfort that feels completely out of their control. This response is driven by the brain’s threat system, which has learnt to associate a specific situation or object with danger. Over time, this can lead to increased anxiety, avoidance behaviours and a growing impact on daily life, especially if the fear starts to limit what you feel able to do.
